🏛️ History

Kasauli was founded in 1842 by the British Raj as a hill station retreat, sitting at an altitude of approximately 1,927 meters (6,322 feet) above sea level. The town served as a retreat for British officers seeking respite from the scorching Indian summers. Its colonial legacy is evident in its architecture — charming cottages, churches, and barracks that still adorn the landscape today.

Some key historical landmarks and facts:

Christ Church — Built with neo-Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows, it stands as a testament to the town’s colonial Christian legacy.

Kasauli Club — Founded in 1880, it exudes an old-world charm that transports visitors back in time.

Kasauli Brewery — One of the oldest operational breweries in India, established in the 1820s by Edward Abraham Dyer. It is known for producing Asia’s first beer brand, “Lion Beer,” and India’s first single malt whisky, “Solan No. 1.” After the town began using much of the springwater, the brewery was moved to nearby Solan. The Kasauli site was converted to a distillery, which Mohan Meakin Ltd. still operates — making it the oldest operating distillery in Asia. Notably, Edward Abraham Dyer was the father of Reginald Edward Dyer, known as the ‘Butcher of Amritsar’ for ordering the firing at Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 — a dark colonial footnote tied to Kasauli’s history.

Kasauli has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Here’s a seasonal breakdown

Summer (March–June) — Cool nights and warm days, with temperatures ranging between 14°C and 28°C. The most popular time to visit, ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Monsoon (July–September) — Rainfall peaks in July, with an average of 325 mm. It’s prudent to be cautious during monsoon due to landslide risks and slippery roads. That said, the mist and green forests are absolutely stunning if you’re careful.

Autumn (October–November) — Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, the forest floor is lush green, and crowds have dissipated — an excellent time for photographers and peace seekers.

Winter (December–February) — Cold, with temperatures between 5°C and 14°C. Snowfall occurs very rarely. When snowfall does occur, it’s mostly near Monkey Point and the higher areas.

🚗 How to Reach

By Air The nearest airport is Chandigarh, around 70 km away, well connected with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. One can also reach via Shimla airport, which is around 35 km from Kasauli.

By Rail Kalka railway station is the nearest major station, about 40 km from Kasauli. From there, one can take a cab or taxi. The famous Kalka–Shimla toy train also passes through scenic Barog, from where you can hire a taxi to Kasauli

By Road Kasauli is well connected by road. Both private and state government buses run from major cities across North India. One can also drive from Delhi or Chandigarh. From Delhi it’s roughly a 5–6 hour drive (~300 km) via NH44 — a very scenic and manageable road trip.
